Acne is a skin condition that occurs when an oily and fatty lubricant known as sebum is secreted into hair follicles and pores by sebaceous glands. The right amount of sebum is meant to lubricate skin and hair, predominantly on the face and scalp, to keep your skin healthy. Consistently dry skin can be a result of too little sebum, yet too much sebum in the follicles causes pores to become clogged, and these hardened plugs that form are what leads to various forms and severity levels of acne.

Acne is predominantly a result of the hormonal changes that take place during puberty. During puberty, there is an increase in the activity of sebaceous (oil-producing) glands. But acne affects people of all ages and can be exacerbated by sweating, lack of sunlight, oral contraceptives, and exercise. Acne can also become aggravated by certain face creams and cosmetics, along with poor overall skin hygiene.

Best Natural Acne Skin Care Tips

While acne is most common among adolescents, it affects 50 million Americans every year. Despite it being such a common skin condition, it does not change how the acne on your face can make you sometimes feel like you’re the only one.

If you struggle with acne, you may often feel self-conscious or anxious in social settings. It is easy to experience low self-esteem in a society where there is a great deal of pressure placed on physical appearance, especially if you have acne. But there is a vibrant and fantastic person beneath the face that you sometimes feel does not accurately represent who you are, and there are ways to help care for your skin in a natural way so you can let that person begin to shine through.

Here are five natural skincare tips to follow if you have acne:

1.) Grapefruit

Grapefruit is rich in vitamin A and C and acts as a natural antioxidant to eliminate toxins in the body. Not only does drinking this tasty juice help encourage healthy skin, but when used topically, it has mild exfoliating properties that help treat acne.

Using grapefruit as a daily toner can help shrink your pores and remove soap residue that leaves the skin dry and flaky.

To make grapefruit toner, combine 1/4 cup of fresh grapefruit juice, a natural antibacterial, and 1/4 cup of unscented, alcohol free witch hazel. The witch hazel acts as an astringent, meaning it will soak up excess oil on your skin. You can use this toner in the mornings and evenings after you wash your face.

2.) Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is primarily an anti-infection oil, but it also has antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. This is why it is used frequently for skin problems from burns and blisters to bug bites and acne.

Tea tree essential oil is also less likely to cause the harsh drying and irritation effects than those of benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is a topical antiseptic used in most acne medications, but tea tree oil is very powerful and potent, and you can tell that just from its strong scent. That said, remember to always dilute this oil before using it on your skin.

To spot treat with tea tree oil, first dilute the essential oil with jojoba oil. Take a cotton swab and dip it into the mixture, then apply the swab to the affected areas. This process can be followed with an unscented moisturizer.

3.) Manuka Honey

Manuka honey has a low pH level that helps balance that of your skin and speeds acne’s healing. Manuka honey has antibacterial properties that work to fight acne-causing and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. As an anti-inflammatory, it works to reduce the inflammation and pain caused by acne.

To make a manuka honey mask, combine two tablespoons of oats with one tablespoon of manuka honey. Add a few drops of lemon juice for consistency and to help remove dead skin cells. Once mixed, apply the mask to your face and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cold water.

4.) Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is commonly used in skincare products for its properties that promote healthy and smooth skin. Still, you can obtain the many benefits of jojoba oil at home without the added ingredients of commercially made facial creams and cleansers. In fact, jojoba oil works well on its own and has a unique chemical structure that resembles human sebum; when applied, jojoba oil triggers your skin to stop producing more sebum, making it excellent for treating acne naturally.

Jojoba oil is antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory, but when it comes to added benefits for the skin and acne treatment, it is anti-aging and moisturizing.

To make a jojoba oil moisturizer, mix equal parts jojoba oil with equal parts aloe vera into a pump bottle and shake until mixed well. Pump twice into your hand and rub your hands together, then lightly apply it to your skin. It will only need about 15-30 seconds to absorb, and then you can wipe off any excess. This moisturizer is good to use once daily. The aloe vera contains salicylic acid that will also work to reduce acne and inflammation.

5.) Rosewater

Rosewater is high in antioxidants, which balance and neutralize the skin’s pH levels. This balance is critical to maintain because acne flourishes in acidic environments. Rosewater is also antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, but not so potent that it cannot be used frequently throughout the day, and it smells nice too.

You can buy rose water toner or make your own. To make a rosewater toner, choose an empty spray bottle and boil that amount (i.e., 10 ounces) of spring water to fill the bottle. Add a handful of dried rose petals, and gently simmer until the roses lose their color. Remove from heat and let the rosewater cool, then strain the rose water through a nut milk bag over a measuring cup. Pour into the spritzer bottle. This toner can be used often throughout the day and makes for a great mist when your skin or the weather is dry.
